Omega-3: The essential fatty acidEssential fatty acids are those that are rich in Omega-3 found in fresh water fish like salmon and trout. This essential fatty acid is also found in walnuts, acai berries, flax seeds, cinnamon, turmeric and olive oil.
Because Enzo's brain is largely made up of fats, those wonderful fish dishes that he loves to throw together for our dinner is one of the ways for his brain to receive the amount of Omega-3 that it requires every day. Let's put this brain food into perspective. Trans-fats are those found in vegetables and meats which is why there is concern with the growing consumption of 'fast food'. If you choose to consume a diet high in these types of fats (trans-fats), you are starving your brain of the nutrients that it needs. For example: without a sufficient supply of omega-3 fatty acids, the body will use saturated fat to construct cell membranes. The resulting cell membranes are less elastic, a situation that makes the heart muscle stiffer and less able to return to a resting state. Trans fats are of particular concern from a health perspective. Trans fats are fats, usually polyunsaturated oils, that have been chemically hydrogenated to convert them into saturated fats. They are found in margarine and in "hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated" oils. You see this term on the majority of food labels in the supermarket. Trans fats displace healthy fats and are believed to contribute to high cholesterol, hardening of the arteries and other health problems. So you can already see the problem with our eating habits and that of our children, and the potential hazards. Eating a diet high in fish and Omega-3s has proved to significantly lower the probability of developing so many degenerative disorders and that include Alzheimer's, dementia ..... and wrinkles. This does mean of course that you need to replace the less healthy fats and oils with Omega-3 and not as well as. "But what if I'm vegan, vegetarian or just can't stand fish?" I hear you cry. Well even Enzo and I take an Omega-3 dietary supplement, and we eat a lot of fish.
